Actor Paul Avery and his wife, Sheila Avery, have died after an early-morning house fire at their home in Blairstown, New Jersey.

Avery, 81, was best known to television fans for playing Hughie, the bartender at Foxy’s, on the long-running ABC soap opera “All My Children.” He also appeared in the 1978 film “Superman” and built a career that included television, film and commercial work.

The fire broke out early Tuesday, June 16, at the couple’s home on Mohican Road. According to local reports citing New Jersey State Police, troopers responded to a residential fire with possible entrapment shortly before 1 a.m.

When emergency crews arrived, the house was engulfed in flames. Firefighters entered the home and found Paul and Sheila unconscious and in critical condition.

Both were treated with CPR after being rescued, but they died shortly afterward. The fire was later brought under control, and the cause remains under investigation.

The couple’s daughter, Kyle Avery, confirmed their deaths in a heartfelt social media post, saying the family was devastated by the loss and grateful to the Blairstown Fire Department for its efforts.

Avery’s life extended far beyond acting. He was also a Vietnam veteran, helicopter pilot, skydiver, glider pilot, journalist and community leader.

After his entertainment career, Avery became deeply involved in local journalism and civic life in New Jersey. He helped found the Ridge View Echo and served as executive editor of the local publication.

Friends and colleagues remembered him as an unforgettable figure in Blairstown. Journalist Joe Phalon described Avery as “the most interesting man in the world,” pointing to his acting career, military service, aviation experience and community work.

Avery had also been known locally for caring for his wife in recent years while continuing to stay active in the community.

His death, along with Sheila’s, has left family, friends, fans and neighbors mourning a couple remembered for their love, service and deep connection to Blairstown.
