Viral German Tourist Freddy Nearly Misses World Cup Match After Travel Nightmare
A viral German soccer fan nearly saw his dream World Cup trip ruined after severe weather canceled his connecting flight to Canada.
The fan, known online as Freddy, had been trying to get to Toronto for Germany’s Group E match against Ivory Coast when his travel plans suddenly collapsed.

Freddy said his connecting flight from Dallas to Canada was canceled because of weather, and he was rebooked on a flight that would arrive too late for the match.
The update sparked a huge reaction on social media. Freddy has gained a large following during his U.S. World Cup road trip, where fans have enjoyed his enthusiastic posts about American food, hospitality, sports culture and travel experiences.
As supporters tried to help him find a way to Toronto, private aviation company Airshare stepped in with a dramatic offer.

The company publicly offered to fly Freddy from Oklahoma City directly to Toronto on a private jet so he would not miss Germany’s match.
Airshare CEO John Owen said the company had a jet ready and was prepared to help if Freddy reached out.
The offer immediately went viral because of the potential cost. A private jet flight from Oklahoma City to Toronto could cost tens of thousands of dollars, with estimates ranging from around $20,000 to $30,000 depending on aircraft, fees and international handling costs.
But Freddy’s travel rescue ultimately took a different route.

By late Friday, he announced that he was on a plane to Buffalo after American Airlines helped arrange a last-minute commercial travel solution. Former NFL star JJ Watt also helped behind the scenes, according to Freddy.
American Airlines later praised its staff for helping get him back on track, saying the match and Freddy “must go on.”
The story became one of the lighter viral moments of the 2026 World Cup, mixing weather delays, fan passion, airline scrambling and a surprise private jet offer.

Germany’s match against Ivory Coast is a key Group E showdown in Toronto. Germany entered the game after a dominant opening win, while Ivory Coast also began the tournament with a victory.
For Freddy, the journey became almost as dramatic as the match itself. What started as a canceled flight turned into a social media rescue mission watched by soccer fans around the world.
