Authorities in Lexington, South Carolina, have found a body during the search for missing personal trainer Elena Katherine Moore, nearly a week after she disappeared after leaving a gym.
Moore, 39, was last seen on June 11 after visiting a Planet Fitness on Whiteford Way in Lexington. Police said she had not been heard from after leaving the gym and was reported missing the next day.
Surveillance footage reportedly showed Moore walking away from the Planet Fitness area and later through a nearby Publix parking lot. She was last seen wearing an olive-green zip-up hoodie and black athletic pants.
After receiving a tip that Moore had been seen near North Lake Drive and Old Cherokee Road, officers and fire personnel searched a wooded area on June 17. At around 2:48 p.m., investigators found an unidentified body in that area.
Police said the clothing on the body matched the description of what Moore was wearing when she disappeared. However, authorities said the coroner must still make an official identification.
The Lexington Police Department has requested the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to conduct a death investigation. Officials have not yet released a cause of death or said whether foul play is suspected.
Moore worked as a personal trainer at Wolf’s Fitness Center in Lexington. Police previously described her disappearance as highly unusual and out of character.
The case drew public attention after police asked for help finding her and received hundreds of tips from the community. Authorities thanked media outlets, local agencies and residents for helping with the search.
For now, Moore’s family, friends and community are waiting for official confirmation from the coroner and further details from investigators.
