LaGuardia Airport temporarily shut down one of its main runways after inspectors discovered another pavement issue near the airstrip, marking the second runway closure at the New York City airport in less than a month.
The issue was found near Runway 4/22, one of LaGuardia’s two primary runways. Airport officials said inspectors discovered an approximately two-inch pavement depression near the runway during an airfield inspection.
Officials said the runway closure was ordered out of caution and that the issue did not pose an immediate safety threat. Still, repair crews were brought in to conduct more testing, determine the cause of the problem and perform any needed stabilization work.
The runway was scheduled to close at 5 p.m. Wednesday and remain closed overnight. During the closure, airport operations were shifted to LaGuardia’s other main runway, 13/31.
The closure caused flight delays during the day, with arrivals reportedly delayed by nearly an hour at one point. Passengers were urged to check directly with their airlines for updated flight status before heading to the airport.
The latest issue comes only weeks after a sinkhole forced the same runway to close during the busy Memorial Day travel period. That earlier closure caused delays and cancellations as crews worked to inspect and repair the pavement.
Airport officials said their goal is to complete the assessment and any required repairs as quickly as possible while making sure the runway is safe before reopening it.
The repeated pavement problems have raised concerns for travelers, especially as the summer travel season begins. LaGuardia remains one of the busiest airports in the New York region, and losing one main runway can quickly affect arrivals, departures and airline schedules.
For now, airport officials say safety remains the priority, and passengers should monitor airline alerts for the latest updates.
