Rex Heuermann Gets Life Sentence After Emotional Gilgo Beach Court Hearing
Rex Heuermann has been sentenced to life in prison without parole, bringing a major legal conclusion to the long-running Gilgo Beach serial killings case.

The 62-year-old former Manhattan architect appeared in Suffolk County court in Riverhead, New York, where families of the victims confronted him during an emotional sentencing hearing. Heuermann previously pleaded guilty to murdering seven women and admitted responsibility for an eighth killing as part of the case.
The victims were killed between 1993 and 2010, and many of their remains were later found near Gilgo Beach and Manorville on Long Island. The case remained unsolved for years before a renewed investigation led to Heuermann’s arrest in 2023.

During the sentencing, relatives of the victims delivered powerful statements describing decades of grief, trauma and unanswered questions. Some family members said the sentence brought justice, but not true closure, because nothing could bring their loved ones back.
Prosecutors described Heuermann as calculated, remorseless and cruel. They said he carefully planned his crimes and used technology, phone records and other methods to avoid detection for years.

Judge Timothy Mazzei strongly condemned Heuermann in court before handing down the maximum sentence. The judge criticized him for showing little remorse and said the victims’ families had suffered for far too long.
The sentencing ended one of New York’s most disturbing criminal cases, but investigators and victims’ advocates say some questions may remain. Authorities have previously said they will continue reviewing possible connections to other unsolved cases.
For the families, the hearing was painful but historic. After years of searching for answers, the man responsible for the murders will never be released from prison.
