Andy Rowell’s One-Word “Tequila” Audition Turned Into One of AGT’s Funniest Viral Moments

America’s Got Talent has featured powerhouse singers, dangerous stunt performers, magicians and dancers, but comedian Andy Rowell proved that an unforgettable audition can be built around something far simpler: one word.

During his 2019 appearance on America’s Got Talent Season 14, Rowell stepped onto the stage as a karaoke performer and chose “Tequila,” the famous instrumental hit by The Champs. The song contains only a few vocal moments, each consisting of the title word, making it one of the most unusual choices possible for a major television talent competition.

Instead of showing off a powerful singing voice, Rowell calmly stood beside a karaoke screen, waited through the long instrumental sections and delivered the word “Tequila” at exactly the right moments.

That was the entire act — and the audience loved it.

Perfect Timing Made the Simple Joke Work

The performance succeeded because Rowell committed completely to the joke. He maintained a serious expression while the upbeat music played, creating a hilarious contrast between his deadpan stage presence and the energy of the song.

As the act continued, the audience began cheering and participating. Even the judges, who initially appeared unsure about what they were watching, eventually joined in with laughter and applause.

The four judges at the time — Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Gabrielle Union and Julianne Hough — all voted “yes,” allowing Rowell to advance to the Judge Cuts round.

A Viral Idea Before America’s Got Talent

Rowell’s “Tequila” routine was not entirely new when he arrived on the AGT stage. His karaoke performance had already gained online attention before the television audition.

TIME reported that a previous version of the routine posted on Instagram had received more than 2 million views. That online success showed that Rowell already understood how a simple idea, strong timing and full commitment could connect with a large audience.

Rowell, a comedian and karaoke enthusiast, also spoke about his desire to treat karaoke as something more than a casual activity at a bar. His unusual performance turned that idea into a memorable television moment.

Why the Audience Loved It

The genius of the audition was its simplicity.

Viewers did not need to understand a complicated story, follow a difficult magic trick or judge technical singing ability. The joke was immediate: a man had entered one of television’s biggest talent competitions to sing a song containing almost no lyrics.

But instead of appearing embarrassed, Rowell performed with complete confidence.

His serious delivery made the act even funnier, while the recognizable music encouraged the audience to join in. By the final moments, the performance had transformed from a quiet joke into a full crowd participation experience.

The Gazette described Rowell as a comedian originally from Cedar Rapids and based in Chicago at the time of the audition. The publication noted that the judges’ skepticism quickly turned into laughter and enthusiastic support.

Four Yeses for One Word

Getting four yes votes on America’s Got Talent is usually associated with breathtaking voices, emotional stories or extraordinary skills. Andy Rowell achieved the same result by delivering one famous word at the perfect time.

His audition became memorable not because it was technically difficult, but because it was original, confident and completely unexpected.

That is what made the performance so effective. Rowell understood exactly what the joke was and never broke character.

The audience understood it too.

A Performance That Still Makes Viewers Laugh

Years after the original audition, Andy Rowell’s “Tequila” performance continues to circulate online and attract viewers who appreciate unusual and unexpected talent-show moments.

The clip remains memorable because it challenges the idea that entertainment must always be complicated. Sometimes, strong comic timing and one clever concept can create a bigger reaction than an elaborate production.

Rowell may not have needed vocal runs, high notes or emotional storytelling. He simply needed a microphone, a karaoke screen and the confidence to wait for his moment.
