Chapter 10

The weeks following Meredith’s violent exile settled into a strange, peaceful rhythm within the Hayes mansion. The dark, suffocating tension that had previously gripped the household evaporated, replaced by the sounds of Emily’s laughter echoing down the grand hallways.

Anna flourished in her new role. She proved to be fiercely protective, deeply intuitive, and incredibly patient with the three-year-old. She guided Emily through her days with a gentle, loving hand, entirely erasing the fearful, timid behavior the little girl had exhibited under Meredith’s cruel regime.

Alexander watched the transformation with quiet, profound fascination. He was a man who spent his life analyzing threats and managing violence, but he found himself increasingly drawn to the calm, warm light radiating from the woman living on the second floor.

He found himself returning home from the city earlier than usual. He would skip evening council meetings just to sit in the playroom and watch Anna read to his daughter. He found himself lingering in the kitchen in the mornings, drinking coffee and listening to the soft, musical cadence of Anna’s voice as she prepared Emily’s breakfast.

It was a quiet Tuesday evening. The massive mansion was silent, the staff having retired to their quarters. Outside, a heavy winter storm was blowing in, rattling the windows with fierce gusts of wind.

Anna sat in the east wing sitting room, curled up in a plush leather armchair near the roaring fire. She was reading a book, enjoying the rare moment of total silence after putting an exhausted Emily to bed. She wore a soft, oversized cardigan over a silk camisole, her bare feet tucked beneath her. The bandage on her heel was gone, leaving only a faint, fading pink scar.

The heavy double doors opened silently.

Anna jumped slightly, startled by the sudden intrusion. She looked up and saw Alexander standing in the doorway. He had just returned from the city, wearing a dark wool overcoat over his tailored suit. Snow clung to his broad shoulders, slowly melting in the warmth of the room. He looked incredibly dangerous, deeply masculine, and utterly exhausting.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you,” Alexander murmured, his deep voice a comforting rumble. He took off his heavy overcoat, tossing it carelessly over a nearby chair.

“It’s fine. I was just reading,” Anna said softly, marking her page and closing the book. She uncurled her legs, intending to stand up out of respect. “Can I get you something? A drink?”

“Stay seated,” Alexander commanded gently, walking into the room. He poured himself a finger of amber liquid from a crystal decanter on a side table and walked over to the fire. He stood near her chair, staring into the flames. “How is she?”

“She was asleep before her head hit the pillow,” Anna smiled warmly, the mere mention of the child bringing a light to her eyes. “We spent the afternoon running around the indoor arena. She is completely fearless.”

“She takes after her father,” Alexander noted, taking a slow sip of his drink. He turned his head, his cold, penetrating eyes locking onto Anna. The firelight caught the refined tattoos on his hands. “She is thriving because of you, Anna. You brought life back into this house.”

Anna flushed deeply, her heart giving a sudden, erratic flutter under his intense scrutiny. She looked down at her hands. “I just care about her. It’s easy.”

“Nothing in my world is easy,” Alexander stated quietly. He set his glass down on the mantelpiece and turned to face her fully. He took a slow step closer to her chair, his towering frame casting a long shadow over her.

Anna’s breath hitched in her throat. The physical proximity of the man was overwhelming. She could smell the cold winter air clinging to his suit, mixed with the expensive, sharp scent of his cologne.

He reached down, his large, tattooed hand gently catching her chin. He tilted her face up, forcing her to meet his dark, unreadable eyes. His thumb brushed softly across her softly defined cheekbone. The touch sent a jolt of electricity straight to her core.

“You are not like anyone else in this house,” Alexander murmured, his voice dropping to a terrifying, intimate whisper. The lethal Mafia boss and the devoted father merged perfectly into a man entirely captivated by the woman looking up at him. “You don’t want my money. You don’t fear my power. You just wanted to protect a little girl who couldn’t protect herself.”

Anna couldn’t look away. She was mesmerized by the danger and the unexpected tenderness in his eyes.

“Alexander…” she whispered, her voice barely a breath.

Before he could respond, before he could close the final agonizing inch between their lips, the encrypted phone in his pocket began to vibrate violently.

Alexander closed his eyes, a flicker of cold fury passing over his features at the interruption. He dropped his hand from her face and pulled the phone out. He glanced at the screen.

The warmth in the room vanished instantly.

“Marcus,” Alexander answered, his voice returning to the icy, lethal cadence of the syndicate boss.

He listened for a brief second, his sharp jawline clenching tight.

“Lock down the estate,” Alexander ordered smoothly, his eyes flashing with dark promise. “Arm the perimeter guards. No one gets in or out.”

He hung up the phone and looked back down at Anna. The tender moment was completely shattered, replaced by the terrifying reality of his world.

“What is it?” Anna asked, her heart pounding frantically.
